Avant Goes Live

AVANT Goes Live, 13-14 September 2013: Sally Golding, John Hegre, Sami van Ingen, Petri Kuljuntausta, Henri Lindström, Greg Pope, Els van Riel.

AVANT Goes Live presents filmperformances. Unique, site-specific actions in which the film material and film projectors are an essential and active part of the moving image event.

AVANT starts on September 13 at Kristinehamn’s art museum with the BritishNorwegian filmmaker Greg Pope and the Norwegian musician John Hegre’s classic performance Light Trap. The performance in Kristinehamn is the Swedish premiere of Light Trap, a work for four 16 mm projectors in which the film strip is manipulated, scratched and repeated.

On September 14, the event moves to Karlstad with an extensive program of filmmakers from England, Belgium and Finland who work in the tradition of expanded cinema. Sally Golding, filmmaker and curator of expanded cinema events will show a comprehensive program of her work. Els van Riel is presenting recent work in which the film and image material comes to life, creating subtle and sublime visual events. Sami van Ingen performs along with the musicians Petri Kuljuntausta and Henri Lindström in a live event with two 35 millimeter projectors placed in the cinema.

Alongside the work of contemporary filmmakers and artists there will be a selection of re-enactments of classical performances by Ernst Schmidt Jr and Peter Weibel form the 1960s. The last work of the event will be Greg Pope’s performance for a 8 mm projector, a work that is designed exclusively for AVANT and cinema Arenan in Karlstad.

During AVANT Thimar/Westling Gallery will exhibit a video by Els van Riel and a unique documentation of Annabel Nicolson’s legendary expanded cinema performance Reel Time (1973).

AVANT is organized by the association Världsalltet, Film Studies at Karlstad University, Film i Värmland – the Regional Film Centre, Kristinehamn Art Museum and the Filmform foundation. With financial support from the cities of Karlstad and Kristinehamn, Karlstad University and Region Värmland.
