Årets upplaga av AVANT uppmärksammar att det hösten 2023 är 50 år sedan Anthony McCalls Line Describing a Cone hade sin världspremiär i Sverige.
AVANT öppnar på Kristinehamns konstmuseum med en visning av Line Describing a Cone och en annan av McCalls s.k. ”solid light films”, Conical Solid, där ljuskäglan, dvs. det objekt som blir till mellan duk och projektor, är det som formar vår upplevelse. De två filmerna på 16 mm följs upp med digitala återbesök i Line Describing a Cone 2.0 samt Doubling Back. Avslutningsvis hålls ett konstnärssamtal mellan Anthony McCall, Greg Pope och Martin Grennberger.
Programmet fortsätter i Karlstad på lördagen kl. 10 i biograf Arenan med fem korta filmer som presenterar McCalls tidiga aktioner och performances. Därefter följer ett nytt verk och performance av filmaren Greg Pope och musikern/ljudkonstnären Lasse Marhaug för en 35 mm projektor, Film Describing a Screen. Under eftermiddagen följer ett program med det internationella nätverket SPECTRAL i samarbete med Expanding North: filmer och live performances med 16 mm-projektorer av Gaëlle Rouard och ett performance av Olivier Perriquet.

The 2023 edition of AVANT celebrates that it is 50 years since Anthony McCall’s groundbreaking Line Describing a Cone had its world premiere in Sweden.
AVANT opens at Kristinehamn Art Museum with a screening of Line Describing a Cone and another of McCall’s so-called solid light films, Conical Solid. These two films on 16 mm are followed up with the digital revisits, Line Describing a Cone 2.0 and Doubling Back. The opening night concludes with an artist talk between Anthony McCall, Greg Pope and Martin Grennberger.
The program continues the following day in Karlstad at cinema Arenan with five short films, presenting McCall’s early performance work. These are followed by a live performance, by filmmaker Greg Pope and musician/sound artist Lasse Marhaug, Film Describing a Screen, made for a 35 mm projector. In the afternoon there will be a programme of the international network SPECTRAL in collaboration with Expanding North – films and live performances for 16 mm projectors by Gaëlle Rouard and a performance by Olivier Perriquet.
